If gas was $3 a gallon here, I’d commute in a Demon. It’s cheap today at a nice $5.95US$/G

I remember being thrilled the last time gas hit $3 because it was on the way down from $4.50

Further, cruise controls should be adjustable for whether you want perfect speed (and lower economy) or fluctuating speed (and better economy). This could be an easy slider knob or just some buttons.
My car is German, it’s like “YOU WANT TO GO 78, I MAKE YOU GO 78”
My wife’s car is Japanese. It runs all cruise control decisions through a committee. Sometimes I feel like I’m being overruled.

This is true... cruise control=/=better economy.
Is it a Toyota? I hate the cruise on our Sienna. If it hits a hill, it lets the speed drop... and drop... and drop... and suddenly it kicks down (sometimes two gears), floors it and overshoots the target speed significantly. And begins coasting again. It doesn’t seem to understand ground that isn’t flat. Or moderation.

I think that’s roughly $4.25/G USD.
Still I think I’ll shut up, it’s around $1.35-1.40 here right now—or $1.46-1.50 for the 89 Octane I use.

Odyssey...same exact behavior. And the excessive kickdown is no doubt worse in the end (vs an earlier downshift).
I’m still trying to get used to all these late 2000s cars with their unusually tall top gears. I’m so used to 5MT or 4AT where you can actually accelerate in-gear on the highway without much fuss. I don’t mind losing 1-2mpg for that.

This has actually become one of my favorite features of my truck... the ability to just walk a fine line and let it growl along in high gear when I want to accelerate. Or on a hill.

$0.20 gap between 87 and 94? That’s not terrible. I mean, the price is still high, but in relative terms... I’d have expected worse.

It’s almost impressive how well my car will stick to the speed you set it to. I’ve pulled up the secret menu on my ZHP to get a digital readout of the RPM. With cruise control on it only varies +/- 15 rpm, even if it has to go up or down a hill. That means in 6th gear the car holds its speed at less than +/- 0.5 mph

To me cruise control is one of the few areas where I am excited about the possibility of autonomous tech improving the feature. If the car/ cruise control knew the terrain ahead it could make better economical decisions about when and how to apply throttle, rather than just waiting for the speed to fall out of the target range and then freaking out.

The 330i BMW gave me when they replaced my airbag pulled pretty decently in 7th & 8th. Granted not as well as the 435i they gave me a few years back was pulling, but still pretty good for a 4-banger. I think the fact that their engines hit peak torque below 1500rpm helps alot with that.

Have you ever been to Kansas? They would need to set 1 universal limit.
Also, I filled up yesterday at $3.13/gallon for 91 non-ethanol, which was a 20 cent jump from the previous tank. BUT it will probably last me until mid July, as it’s warm again, which means electro-two wheelin’.

RPM=/= load
Load=gas expense.

I am aware that RPM=/= load. I was referring to the ability of the cruise control to stick extremely close to the set speed than anything else. The digital readout I can bring up for my speed only shows whole numbers, but the RPM readout shows down to a single RPM, which, after some math, gives me the speed in a much finer detail than either the digital readout or the dials.

I actually like more the electric RPM limiters than the fuel cut off ones.

The thing is it doesn’t need to be an issue even today. Cruise on my ancient 4-speed auto works just fine. Speed is nailed within a very tight range and the only thing that unsettles it a bit is an extra-steep hill, even then it doesn’t overreact. It’s programming, and Toyota’s SUCKS.

It might be higher now.

Having dealt with holiday traffic this weekend what we need is gps enhanced cruise control, too many people rubberband on mountain roads because their vehicles don’t have enough torque to maintain speeds on grades, meanwhile my FiST is rocksteady and I end up having to pass them everytime we go up a hill, only to have them accelerate down hills and pass me again. I promise you any gas you might have burnt maintaining speed up the hill will even out when you don’t have to be constantly breaking and accelerating on a 1 hour drive.

Mine has laser guided cruise control, which will maintain a set distance between my car and the one it’s following, braking when needed, and beeping at me if it feel I need to take over control of the brakes.
It will also completely blow past the max setpoint whilst going down hill, without even thinking of applying the brakes whatsoever.
I’m sure Nissan had their reasons, but unsure what they might have been thinking.

Gas prices are like $7/gal. Car gets 15 mpg city, max. Insurance is over $300 a month on a 15 year old vehicle.
...and I don’t even care anymore. Just toss all of my money out of the sunroof and let’s call it even.

With more and more forced induction setups coming out of the factories, you see the “cut fuel at max rpm” method less and less these days. Cutting off fuel on an FI vehicle tends to make em lean out and blow up. Instead, they cut ignition these days iirc.
I believe the Hondata folks learned that lesson the hard way on their initial release. (Actually, maybe it was AEM)
